Why Consultation?
Consultation is a space for you to seek guidance and support regarding any and all of the questions, challenges, and concerns that emerge throughout your client work. It’s tailored to your present-moment clinician needs, whether that be processing a complex client case, figuring out the next steps in a client care plan, processing your own feelings that are emerging as part of your client work, creating and maintaining boundaries in your therapeutic relationships, and so much more.
So, when you end a client session and think, “did I handle that correctly?” or, “was that the right thing to say?,” or, “I have no idea what to do next to support this person,” consultation provides a safe place to figure it out with the support from someone who’s been there before.
Consultation is different from other forms of education and training because it moves you out of the theoretical and into the real-world and real-time application of all the things you’ve listened to, watched, and read about nutrition counseling and client-care for eating disorders and disordered eating.
Which Clinician Type Are You?
You love Intuitive Eating as a concept, but struggle with applying the principles in practice.
You’re familiar with Intuitive Eating, you’ve spent some time learning about the principles, you’ve started integrating the framework into your practice, but sometimes get lost in the nuances of the practice and find yourself feeling stuck figuring out how Intuitive Eating “fits” with other aspects of your practice. Like what if a client is diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol? Or has IBS? Or has a food allergy or intolerance? Then where does “unconditional permission to eat” fit? Or you’re wondering, at what point in eating disorder recovery is it appropriate to introduce Intuitive Eating? Or your client experiences food insecurity and your unsure if Intuitive Eating is even an option.
I can help with that!
You feel like a salmon swimming upstream trying to embrace a weight inclusive approach to care.
You know that diets don’t work. You’ve witnessed the harm that the pursuit of intentional weight loss can cause. (Maybe you’re even grappling with the awareness that you’ve perpetuated some of that harm.) You want to fully commit yourself to a weight-inclusive approach to care but can’t entirely grasp how to do that when the systems in which you are operating and the clients you are seeing are still so invested in a weight-centric model of health. Gah, where do you even begin!
I get it! I’ve got your back.
Your heart and soul are 100% that of a helper, but eating disorders are totally outside of your comfort zone.
Eating disorder referrals make your heart race and your palms sweaty because dietitian school definitely didn’t prepare you for these cases. You want to help but are so afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing. You’d love to feel more confident in your ability to support these clients, but opportunities to learn how to do that don’t really exist in your current role. Or maybe your area of practice is outside the world of eating disorder treatment, but you know that regardless of your area of practice eating disorders and disordered eating show up and you want to feel more confident in your ability to support these folks!
Been there! Let’s build your skillset and boost your confidence together.
About Dana!
Dana’s credentials:
Registered dietitian for almost 14 years
Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor
Certified Eating Disorder Specialist & Consultant
Group practice owner
Dana’s (abbreviated) story:
When I became a dietitian in 2010 I didn’t know what I wanted to do in the field, but I did know one thing - it wasn’t eating disorders. Having received very little training in or exposure to eating disorders through my dietetics education, working in this space felt totally intimidating to me. Little did I know, that regardless of my area of practice eating disorders and disordered eating were going to show up in some capacity. It was that realization that led me down a path of personal and professional self discovery I never would have imagined. And just five years later I found myself totally immersed in the world of eating disorders, disordered eating, weight inclusive care, and mindful and Intuitive Eating and knew then that I had found my calling.
I’ve spent the last 9 years learning all that I can about helping people heal their relationship to food and body and I can say that, without a doubt, professional consultation has been the single most valuable investment I’ve made in growing my confidence and skills as a clinician. I am so thrilled to finally be in a space to make this service available to other clinicians!
Dana’s areas of special interest:
I specialize in outpatient, adult eating disorder treatment, Intuitive Eating, and weight inclusive practice, with a special interest in binge eating disorder, perceived loss-of-control or compulsive eating, emotional eating, chronic dieting, and body image distress. I have experience working with the full range of eating disorder diagnoses in the outpatient, adult population and am happy to support you with these cases, too!
While I LOVE supporting clinicians who are working in disordered eating and eating disorder spaces I also LOVE supporting clinicians who work in other areas of practice but inevitably still encounter disordered eating in their client population. So, while of course consultation is a fit for eating disorder clinicians, it’s also a fit for non-eating disorder clinicians wanting to feel more confident in navigating disordered eating when it inevitably appears in their area of practice.
